This might just blow some Bears fans minds

It certainly did for me.

Check out where one Danielle Manning is on the list of safeties.

Yes that Danielle Manning is ahead of Troy Palomalu in terms of defeats (or an effective measure of the quality of a persons tackling). Yes that's right Danielle Manning. I don't know what this means for his coverage skills (which I still think are bit weak), but it means he is a sure tackler and a somewhat useful defender. Also Urlacher and Briggs are among the few 4-3 backers who rate highly here (no surprise here I supose). Harris and Alex Brown also are very good at their repsective positions (which I suspected based on how poorly teams have run to the right end and up the middle while Harris and Alex Brown have been in Chicago).

So what do you guys (and gals) think about this? Is Danielle Manning any good in light of this new information or was it a one year fluke? Are his coverage skills still too suspect to trust him at FS?

I would be curious to know how much of those numbers relied on data collected when Manning was actually playing nickel. He played a lot of nickel back last season and not as much free safety.

I don't think Manning is a good free safety regardless of what number of tackles he accrued. The Bears have tried to play him there his first 3 seasons and he can't stick at the position because he seems incapable of making the necessary reads. A free safety can't get beat over the top in the cover 2 but Manning would routinely bite on fakes and get beaten deep. The Bears are going to play a strong safety at free because Manning is so poor at the position and everything we've seen in games backs that up. Manning is fast and possesses athleticism but hasn't shown that he can grasp the mental aspects of playing the free safety position. Lovie had to personally tutor him so that he could play the nickel position and that seems like where they should leave him.

That's a fair point. I think he's better than I thought he was, but at best this makes him a useful nickleback/ SS, but it doesn't make him a Free Saftey.

This improves my opinion about him, but not as a FS
